Error Message: "The PDF doesn’t contain a text layer"
When uploading a statement in the Financial Dataloaders, you may encounter the following error message:
"The PDF doesn’t contain a text layer."
What Does This Mean?
This error indicates that the PDF file you are trying to upload consists of images rather than text that can be selected or searched. As a result, the dataloader cannot extract the necessary data from the document.
How to Resolve the Issue
There are a few ways to resolve this issue:
-
Check the Originality of the PDF:
If the PDF is the original file sent directly from the bank, ensure it hasn't been edited or altered in any way (such as being scanned or saved as a different file format). If the document was modified, you may need to request a fresh copy from the bank. -
Request a PDF with a Text Layer:
If the file you received from the bank is an image-based PDF (without a text layer), reach out to the bank and request a copy of the statement that includes a text layer. The bank should be able to provide a document that is text-based and can be processed by the system. -
Use Scan & OCR Tool:
If obtaining a new file from the bank is not an option, you can use a Scan & OCR tool to grid the statement. Once gridded, you should be able to export the file into Excel and process the statement
Additional Tips:
- Verifying Text Layers: After running OCR, you can verify the presence of a text layer by trying to select text or by searching for words in the PDF.
