Here are two primary error messages that may appear when uploading files via the FIT dataloader:
1. “Unsupported file type”
This error indicates that the file format you’re attempting to upload is not currently supported by the version of the FIT dataloader you’re using. To verify if you’re on the latest release, navigate to the About section in the Altia ribbon. If the file format is not supported, please forward the statement files to our team for evaluation and potential integration in a future release of the dataloader. The files can securely be sent over using our encryption tool, which can be found by going to Help > Encrypt Files > Select File > Attach file to email.
As a temporary workaround, use the Scan & OCR utility to structure the document manually and export the data to Excel for further processing.
2. “File does not contain a text layer”
This error means that the uploaded PDF lacks an embedded text layer, which is required for text extraction by the dataloader. To confirm this, open the PDF and attempt to copy/paste content into a plain text editor (e.g., Notepad). If no text transfers, the document is image-based or rasterised.
This typically occurs when the PDF is not the original digital statement issued by the bank, but rather a scanned or modified version. In rare cases, the originating bank may distribute PDFs without text layers. If so, you’ll need to request a native, text-based version of the statement directly from the bank to ensure compatibility with the dataloader.
